5 Simple Steps to Hydrate Winter Hair

Winter is a time to nurture and care for your hair with intention. Cold, dry air and indoor heating can draw essential moisture from our hair, causing breakage, dryness and lack of vitality. Our weekly Winter Hair Ceremony is a hair treatment to help restore balance and hydration. Here's how to replenish dry hair in 5 easy steps:

Step 1: Breathe

Taking a deep breath to ground and center yourself opens you to accept self care as a ceremony. Before you begin, say to yourself "My hair is hydrated and vibrant." Say it again if you have to!

Step 2: Cleanse

Now is the time to bump up to an Innersense Organic Beauty hairbath with additional hydration. If you typically use Pure Harmony Hairbath, switch to Color Awakening Hairbath. If you typically use Color Awakening Hairbath, switch to Hydrating Cream Hairbath. And if you're already using Hydrating Cream Hairbath, make sure to rely on Step 4 and apply the mask more frequently than once a week.

How to: Gently work your hairbath of choice into wet hair, using your fingertips to massage the scalp and release oil and build up. Rinse thoroughly.

Step 3: Condition

Choose a rich conditioner with natural oils, like Color Radiance Daily Conditioner or Hydrating Cream Conditioner. Those oils, like coconut oil, help lock in moisture.

How to: Apply conditioner on soaking wet hair, and smooth conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, section by section. Rinse thoroughly and blot hair dry with a bamboo towel, t-shirt or silk hair wrap. Apply Sweet Spirit Leave In Conditioner to seal in moisture.

Step 4: Mask

Apply 1-2 pumps of Harmonic Treatment Oil, our hair and scalp oil treatment, to fingertips and gently massage into the scalp. Wet hair, then apply a small amount of Hydrating Hair Mask, our ultimate dry hair treatment, mid's to ends, and leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing (you can totally tuck your hair into a shower cap and relax!). Be sure to massage the scalp while rinsing thoroughly.

Step 5: Style

Use our "moisture + hold" formula to lock in hydration during the winter! For instance, choose a rich cream, like Serenity Smoothing Cream or Quiet Calm Curl Control, as a styling base, then layer on a hold product, like I Create Lift, I Create Volume or I Create Hold. This combination seals moisture in the hair and prevents cold air, dry-weather frizz, in all types of hair, from straight hair to curly hair.

Winter Hair Tips to Hydrate and Moisturize

This once a week, deep conditioning hair and scalp treatment for all hair types will add much-needed moisture to damaged hair as cold weather approaches. Think of your hair care like you do your skin care! Here are a few extra ways to keep your hair healthy and moisturized with our clean beauty products during the winter:

  • Use low temperature water to wet and rinse the hair as added heat can dry your hair even further
  • Use Sweet Spirit Leave In Conditioner throughout the week to hydrate dry ends
  • Use Refresh Dry Shampoo in between washes to absorb oil at the roots and extend the time between wash days
  • If you work out frequently and prefer to wet your hair when you shower, try skipping the shampoo and washing your hair with only conditioner or using a small amount of hairbath to spot cleanse your hair
  • On days that you condition, leave 10% of the conditioner in your hair when you rinse. Your hair will love the added hydration!
  • Sleep with a humidifier in your bedroom. Keep one in your office, too!
  • Sleep wearing silk-lined headwear or on satin pillowcases to help lock in moisture
  • Hats and beanies look adorable but they also help to lock hydration in the hair! When possible, tuck exposed ends under your beanie or hat
